School for Psychics by K.C. Archer is a great novel for anyone who loves detective and criminal investigation books/shows, paranormal stories (i.e. Libba Bray’s The Diviners series), or conspiracy-filled action novels (think Dan Brown’s books). In this, we follow Teddy, a 24 year old Las Vegas native who constantly gets into trouble for consistently winning at poker games as she must be cheating (though in actuality, she doesn’t; her repeated success is due to her gut-feeling knowledge of when someone is bluffing or lying). However, she finds herself playing a poker game against someone she cannot read, which turns her life upside down. Even stranger, after that game she is confronted by an ex-cop who informs her of her true identity: she is a psychic. Clint, the ex-cop, then invites Teddy to become a student at a special school for psychics, and she hesitantly accepts. Once there, Teddy meets others with various psychic abilities, and without meaning or wanting to, makes some friends. Finally, she starts to enjoy her life. But then Teddy starts digging into her past, and finds that the people who she put her trust in might not be on her side.
I really enjoyed reading this book, the plot was intriguing and captivating (I was able to read this 350 page book in one day). However, I feel like it was rushed, as a lot of time was glanced over, omitting deep character development. Additionally, I would have enjoyed more description or scenes of the psychic classes, as I found them extremely interesting, not to mention that the book is titled after the school for psychics. Overall though, I would highly recommend reading School for Psychics by K.C. Archer, and personally, I can’t wait until the second novel gets published.
