Internship Summer 2018 Work Diary | Week Two (May 22nd-26th)

Tuesday, May 22nd

Not much to say about today as we spent the entirety of our time painting picket fences again. We finished priming the pickets, then started our first coat of paint (we have a handful left to do).

Hours: 9:00am to 4:45pm

Overall Working Hours: 7 hours 45 minutes

Wednesday, May 23rd

Today we went to the Daniel Hiester House to help sort the never-ending pile of artifacts that were found under the floor of the summer kitchen. To do this, we separated each type of pottery/ceramic as well as glass, metal and bone. Additionally, I was able to do some pottery reconstruction, in the sense that I separately bagged the pottery shards that joined together (this is easily my favorite part of artifact lab work). By the end of the day, we had sorted around five gallon-buckets filled with artifacts into their proper order (believe me, that's a whole lot). It was really fun and I hope we get a chance to do more pottery reconstruction!

Hours: 9:45am to 6:00pm

Overall Working Hours: 8 hours 15 minutes

Thursday, May 24th

Continued painting picket fences. Started painting the trim of the visitor's center. I got sunburn.

Hours: 9:00am to 4:45pm

Overall Working Hours: 7 hours 45 minutes

Friday, May 25th

Continued painting the fence! Also, we took out a large rug that was soaked from all the horrible rain we've been having so that it and the carriage house floor could dry. Additionally, me and another worker got scared when we were having lunch at Dewees; suffice it to say, I will not be going into that building alone...

Hours: 9:00am to 4:00pm

Overall Working Hours: 7 hours

Saturday, May 26th

I said I wasn't go into Dewees alone...and that was a lie. I kind of had to go in because I was the first one there and the photographer who was going to take pictures of various objects at Dewees needed to be let in...so I had to go inside by myself. But it wasn't that bad. So, I helped the photographer bring his equipment into the building, then helped a bit in setting it up. To do this, we had to grab a bunch of reproductions and actual artifacts from Henry's and the Speaker's House, so we packed them up and brought them to Dewees to be used in the museum-style photos. Once that was done, me and the other intern went to Henry's initially to continue working on the picket fences, as our 'boss' (it feels weird calling her that, but that's I guess what she is??) didn't think we'd be getting any visitors to give tours to. Whelp, that was not the case...and I gave my first tour! It went pretty well, I think? I mean, I was kind of reliant on my notes, and the couple I gave the tour to asked a lot of questions that I didn't have the answers to. But otherwise, I think it went fine, better than expected at the very least. Finally, we cleaned up.

Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm

Overall Working Hours: 8 hours

Week 2 Total Work Time: 38 hours 45 minutes (minus 5 hours for lunch each day) = 33 hours 45 minutes
