Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley is a fiction novel that takes place on Long Island partly in historical times (during the Seven Years War) and partly in the modern day. In this we follow Charley, a curator, who recently moved into the area to care for her niece after her brother's death. If this was not stressful and emotional enough, she also has to deal with many obstacles with the restoration project at the historic Wilde House Museum of which she aids in. Simultaneously, we follow Lydia Wilde and captured French Canadian Jean-Philippe de Sabran as they come to terms with the less than ideal situation they find themselves, and Lydia's family, in. Filled with nods to American early history with a bearable amount of romance, I believe this novel is a must read.
From the start I was taken aback by this novel, as it mirrors my current situation (I am at present interning at an historic house, performing similar tasks as Charley the curator). While this was delightfully surprising, I was more so astonished to find myself enjoying Kearsley's novel a lot more than I expected. This is because I usually am not a fan of romance, nor do I find myself gravitating towards historical fiction. However, with this novel I was truly enjoying myself. In fact, I would love to read more of Kearsley's works.
While I do not have any recommendations in the vain of if you liked 'x' book, you will like Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley, I found this to be an easy way to get a start into the historical fiction with romantic elements genre.
