Project Title: Preservation Planning: Barabara Curtis Adachi Bunraku Collection, C.V. Starr East Asian Library, Columbia University Libraries

Learning Outcome Achieved: Research

My Role: I am the sole author of this project.

Project Description: This assignment required that I write a preservation report for a given archival collection via an online finding aid. Within the report, I was to predict the types of damage expected to occur to the items within the collection and determine methods of treating the items. Specifically, this treatment report was to be written in the form of a research paper using a minimum of three sources which were to be cited in a notes and bibliography citation.

Methods: In order to complete this project, I first studied the archival collection I was given, noting what types of items were present within the collection. Once I familiarized myself with this collection, I then began my research on the different types of damage expected for each item type, and what treatment possibilities were available. I cross-referenced multiple sources, ensuring that my treatment report covered all possible damage and treatment options. Using this collected information, I was able to determine the possible conditions of the items within my collection, any remediation to address the potential conditions, and any reformatting actions that should be carried out.

Rationale: Through this project, I researched the possible damage and treatment practices that concerned archival collections. To do this, I used a variety of resources, whether it be physical books, or online articles and websites. Once relevant data was collected, I then critically assessed what I had found in order to determine what damage I would find in my given archival collection and how to best address it through various preservation techniques. Preservation practices are crucial to the field, as they help ensure that information materials last through time, and through this theoretical plan, I gave my own opinions on how to best take care of these types of items.

This project was taken from INFO: 632-01 Conservation and Preservation which I was enrolled during the Fall 2018 semester.
