Learning Outcome Achieved: Communication
My Role: I am the sole author of this project.
Project Description: This project required me to create a collection of images or items, preferably concerning a chosen theme, that would then contain descriptive metadata using controlled vocabularies.
Methods: Because of my interests in Classics and my undergraduate dissertation in said subject, I decided to focus my Omeka-S project on Prometheus, both Promethean iconography and literature. In order to collect the images for the art pieces and literature that pertained to the ancient Greek mythological figure, I performed online research. Once I found the images I wanted to use, I collected as much metadata on the items represented in order to provide information on each. After this was collected, I used controlled vocabularies from Getty, for the objects, and Library of Congress, for the books, in order to standardize the descriptions of each item. Finally, with the images and relevant metadata, I created an Omeka-S site to hold and display the content.
Rationale: Though this project was mainly focused on the use of descriptive metadata using controlled vocabularies, an important aspect was using Omeka-S to display and share the content. Therefore, not only did I have to collect the relevant information, but I also had to present it in a way that was easily accessible to my given audience. To do this, I chose vocabularies that best described the objects or books represented by the images, included images to grab hold of my audience's attention, and formatted it to be intuitively navigable. Through my Omeka-S site, I hoped to teach how prevalent the figure of Prometheus is within our culture, despite being a figure from an ancient mythology.
