Learning Outcome Achieved: Reflective Practice
My Role: I am the sole author of this project.
Project Description: This project required me to choose a topic that I thought would be relevant to my future career. Once the topic was chosen and approved, I researched it extensively in order to write a comprehensive analysis and critique on my findings. In addition to writing a paper, I was required to present my research to my fellow students.
Methods: I decided to research this topic because decisions behind collections management is interesting to me, and is very prevalent in GLAM fields. Specifically, I was interested in decisions made by archaeologists and museums, as they pertain to my background and future professional prospects. To complete this project, I first gathered as many sources concerning archaeological and museum collections management. Before reading through them, I determined which sources were most authoritative and relevant to my research. Once narrowed, I read through the sources, keeping notes on quotations I thought were relevant and points I wanted to introduce. Then, I critically assessed each source for the paper, interjecting my own analyses where necessary, in order to review the literature on my topic. Finally, I used the information written in my paper to create a condensed, easily accessible, and visually engaging presentation.
Rationale: My work on this paper and presentation represents professional-level work on a topic that I am not only personally interested in, but is important to the LIS field. I first researched the topic, choosing a variety of relevant sources, then assessed them critically in order to answer my thesis question. I believe that my reflections on this topic advance and contribute to the current trend of questioning the levels of transparency provided by institutions. Additionally, the tables within the paper and the presentation provide further points of engagement for the project's audience.
This project was taken from LIS: 651-01 Information Professions which I was enrolled during the Spring 2018 semester.
