Museum Information Management

Detailed Description: In this course, students will learn to manage a museum's most important information source: its collection information. Students will learn the functions of collection management systems, how to catalog cultural objects by applying descriptive metadata standards and best practices, and explore the potential for creating new access points to museum collections through digital tools.

Course Goals:

  • Develop in students an appreciation for and interest in advancing information management in museums, particularly collections information

  • Provide aspiring museum professionals greater insight into museum information management by inviting professionals working with museum collections, including libraries and archives, to present real-world applications data management

  • Get students excited about new technologies for making museums’ information more widely available and usable for society at-large

Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to

  • Understand the protocols on the use of collection management system in conjunction with a DAM and/or other applications for documenting a museum collection

  • Catalog cultural objects, applying various practices and standards (e.g., Cataloging Cultural Objects, Getty Vocabularies, etc.)

  • Evaluate strategies for creating new access points to museum collections through digital tools
